My kids are with me in my daily grind and I love to include them in my projects as well as giving them projects of their own. One day that won't be with me and I want them to have wings to fly. I feel that
learning a trade, along with a scholarly education in homeschool, is crucial. My efforts to broaden their horizons includes working alongside me as the eagerly request to learn. Today, my oldest daughter, Miss C, is getting to work on this Art Deco nightstand by giving it a modern chic makeover.
Whenever I receive a piece of furniture for free, I let one of my six kids have at it. Both of my parents have generously given various items for them to work on, and this time my father gave us this piece to revive along with a dressing table. I am working on the dressing table and my daughter gets to revive this rough-looking nightstand.
Turns out this is a piece made by
Virginia House Furniture right here in the U.S. and this company is still making handmade furniture today. Isn't that cool?
DIY TIME
Miss C isn't a foundling when working on furniture since she has already done a few pieces like
this table and
this dresser, to name a few. She knew right off that to get started, sanding was absolutely needed. She used my sander with a 150 grit sandpaper to get the finish in shape for paint.
Once she finishes prepping, Miss C uses a beige coat of paint. This is because she intends to use a metallic paint for the topcoat that can sometimes be translucent. Also, she is using a foam brush because metallic paints tend to showcase all of your brush strokes.
After the base coat has dried for a couple of hours, she used one of my favorite metallic paints by Modern Masters called Champagne. I've used it and my other favorites metallics on several pieces before like
my vanities and
tables.
PAINTING
Two coats give it a nice rich look, but Miss C wanted to add a modern flair to this piece. She decided to "dip" the legs in white and add some funky fun to the front.
THE REVEAL
After her final touches, I must say I love this piece with the modern chic look.
It's fun and has so much more character to it than before, don't you think?
Miss C even lined the drawer with a fun vintage fabric to showcase more eye-candy.
We had fun shopping for some vintage pieces to stage this piece. The vintage print had a mate that is now hung in
my boys' bedroom. And... that Gorham brass bowl is now available in
my shop along with this nightstand. Yay! (SOLD)
