There I am minding my own business, heading to get groceries on a cold, gray, raining morning. I drove past a busy part of town and almost missed seeing this sitting on the side of the road set out for trash. You know I just had to snag it on the way back home. Today, this vintage Mid Century Modern media stand is too cute to trash. Let's take this trashure and make it new, shall we? Mide Century Media Stand Before Makeover | prodigalpieces.com Maybe you're wondering what I see in this thing. Well, it is built to last...like forever, last. And, quite honestly, these are such handy pieces to have in a home. They provide extra storage to most any space. It is definitely a Mid Century Modern media cabinet - the type used to store a turn table and LPs. However, it could be used as a nightstand, entertainment center, entry console...you get the idea. You can see my past Mid-Century makeovers HERE in these past posts.

DIY TIME

First, this thing is dirty. I mean, dirty, like stuck in a garage for decades kinda dirty. In addition, it has wear to the top and is missing the two sliding front doors. Mid Century Modern Media Stand Damaged Top | prodigalpieces.com See the grooves in the top and bottom edges? Originally, they are for two narrow doors to slide side to side. Vintage Media Stand Door Slots | prodigalpieces.com No problem on the missing doors. I sent JC (aka. husband) a shot of the dimensions to he could pick me up some ply on the way home from work. Here's what our texts are like... Measurements for Mid Century Modern Media Stand Makeover | prodigalpieces.com Truthfully, am I not a fun gal? tsk. You know it. However, it turns out that while talking on the phone about what to buy, I found two scrap pieces already in our stash. I don't know where they came from as we both dug through before he went to the store. Seriously, though, isn't that always how it works? gee... Scrap Ply for Media Stand Doors | prodigalpieces.com

PAINT

JC set about to cut and sand those pieces for me while I began work on cleaning that cabinet. First, I used a water/vinegar mixture of a 2:1 ratio to clean that mess up. Then, I applied wood filler to all the gouges and screw holes I found. When that cured, my sander and I had fun cleaning it all up. Next, I used a micro foam roller and Gripper primer to pretty it up and get it ready for paint. Priming Vintage Media Stand for Paint | prodigalpieces.com Not only do I paint the outside, but I also I have fun with a punch of color on the inside. I'm saving that for the end. Meanwhile, I gave those doors a dark Hickory Gel Stain and let cure. Like peek-a-boo love! Likewise, it's the same color combination I used a few years ago for a custom order on a MCM chest HERE. If you can't tell I had such fun with this, there's something wrong. Moreover, let me know what you think. Do you love it too? It certainly wasn't trash-worthy, me thinks.

Love it. I especially love the round door "handles". Very authentic to a MCM piece. Don't ask me how I know that ;) Sincerely, Catherine, A mid century piece myself.
