You just finish dinner and cleanup and then sit down to finally rest for the day. Then, you hop on your computer to close off the grind only to see someone one street over posts something for free you cannot overlook. What to do? Ask one of your kids to drive you over there and shop! Folks, spontaneity is the name of the
trashure game, and my kids get it. Besides, I spy a vintage footstool makeover in there somewhere.
Did I grab it all? Nah. However, here is what I did haul home with help from my daughter (thank you,
Miss E!).
First, I did take this weathered chair with vintage enamel wash basin (a planter) along with a piece of cast iron from a red stove. Second, was this other enamel pot filled with rolling pins and a handful of mini wood houses.
Third is this antique light fixture that I can actually make use of in my home with new wiring and TLC.
Fourth, this metal milk jug, and paint can with zinc canning lid alongside are ready for a new life or home.
Last, but not least, this vintage footstool with fun beauty accessories including my favorite find of the whole bunch.
This curly girl is stoked! Do you know what it is? When I saw it, the first thing out of my mouth was, "it smells like... burnt... feathers". Tell me the movie line I just quoted in your comment below.
MINI MAKEOVER
So, for today's mini makeover fun, I pick this vintage footstool holding up these other finds. Just so you know, I'm not new to footstool fun. You can see my past work in these posts about
chairs & stools. Here's a closer look at this potential.
All legs present (check!), original upholstery (check!), and totally in need of a major overhaul in mini style (check!).
As you can imagine, I'm eager to get that junk off and see what's underneath.
After removing the legs, here's what I'm facing. eep.
Not only is the foam is disintegrated and the upholstery tie-off is... er... interesting, but I've never seen anything like it.
Then, after removing the upholstery, foam and oodles of staples, I have this thing down to bare bones. Next, I clean the legs and spray paint them this metallic color for an earthy feel.
Meanwhile, the paint is curing, and I tackle the upholstery. I have enough remnant leftover from my tufted French mattress I made for
my family room remodel. If you've ever wanted to try your hand at upholstery, a footstool is totally the way to go. You can read

After I layer the fabric and batting, I staple down working around the edge slow and steady.
Last, but not least, I want to add some button tufts using this completely retro button set I have in my stash. Don't you think they go awesome with the 70's vibe?
STEPPIN' UP
Finally, after my DIY adventure, this little vintage footstool is ready for many more years of fun.
The metallic legs have that slight shimmer that pick up the shimmer in the upholstery.
Meanwhile, up on top, the buttons break up that mushroom look and give it a story.
In addition, I finish the bottom with a piece of my beautiful scrap linen.
