Okay...let's just get this outta the way. Indeed, there is something weird about the era of country blue and HEARTS!! There...I said it. I have nothing against blue. As a matter of fact, blue is actually one of my favorite colors. As for the hearts, nothing against those either. But... (you always have to have one of those, right?) However, the two paired together for an entire decade makes one wane on their decorative sense. Further, take this vintage country shelf, for instance. Need I say more?

Furthermore, it even has that country cute wallpaper taped over the cutouts in the opening. For historical reference, here's what I've done with heart cut-outs in the past.
SEE HERE. Sometimes I embrace them and other times they gotta go. Today, I'm all about remediation. Let's go!
MORE BANG FOR MY BUCK
If you happen to run into a heart cut-out situation like this in your own decor or in a hand-me-down store, don't worry. There is hope! First, I remove the bottom peg slat by doing a little hammering.

Meanwhile, I want to save as much as possible since I don't like waste. To start with I drill the back of this piece with my forstner bit to be able to pop out the pegs from behind. It worked beautifully. Yay! Additionally, notice the piece of wood also laying on the table. That is my replacement piece coming soon.

Next, I use a smaller forstner bit to make coordinating holes on the new board after its cut to size. Then, I glue then in and nail the entire set into the existing spot on my vintage country shelf.

Finally, I'm at the point of paint. Although I could go with any color, this time around I'm going with a semi-gloss black. Not only is it easy to clean, but also has a modern vibe, and is durable.
DONE AND DONE
In short, she's said good-bye to her past, taken on a new style and new life. BAM! Here's my vintage country shelf that is country no more.

Is this much of a makeover? Yes and no. Yes, because it presents a whole new vibe, but not really a huge difference. However, I could've flipped the shelf upright and left the pegs off. In addition, I also could have taken it all apart and built something completely new since it's wood.

As I most often do, this is now available along with other vintage finds, handmade creations, and redeemed furniture in
my online store.
