When spring and summer roll around in these parts, everyone begins having their yard sales after their spring cleaning. It used to be more my thing to drive around and peruse, but I rarely have time anymore. My focus has more been aimed at finishing things around my home to make use of treasures I've hung onto for decorating our remodeled spaces. I truly love to add salvaged decor wherever I can.
Take for instance these two finds. One is a bit of architectural salvage a friend thought I would enjoy. Then, there's the ghost mirror I found hidden in the dirt at a barn sale. You might say they're orphans looking for their forever home. Well, I'm eager to see them in the spot I've envisioned for them. Do you see the potential? You can see my past salvaged decor posts

CLEAN-UP TIME
First, both were filthy and needing a bit of work. The mirror is made of plaster and wood with beautiful gold leaf gilding. However, it has come looks at the bottom joints, and the back is falling off. That means the mirror is barely holding in.
I don't mind the chipping and flaking parts. That's all part of the story. But, in order to make this usable I glue the joints and reinforce the bottom. Then, I lightly spray the frame with a poly to seal it all in.
Next, that salvaged decor piece needs some lovin'. After it's clean I use my hemp oil to saturate the wood and refresh it. I've done this to
my antique pew a
set of theater seats, and even
my kitchen range hood made from salvaged base board. You can use tung oil, linseed oil, or hemp oil...many different ways.
DECORATING TIME
Finally, my living room remodel is getting the finished touches. I originally had a
trashure mirror hung here. However, I have had this ghost mirror just waiting to add to my home story.
It's not there as much to reflect a person or thing, but as a piece of art. Then, you can see that gorgeous wood architectural piece above it. That dark wood looks great on the soft white walls framed by our elm beams.
