It's already the second Tuesday of the month and that means {{drumroll}} it's Reduce, Reuse, REFASHION time! You're in for a treat as I always love to share this time with you. What you see below might look like a magnified wadded piece of gum. However, it is actually a wadded-up jersey knit bedsheet that I'm going to turn into a refashioned jumper for my lil' self. Jersey Knit Bedsheet before Refashioned Jumper | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces Reduce, Reuse, REFASHION series hosted by Larissa of Prodigal Pieces | Come learn to create for you and your home | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces How in the world does a bedsheet inspire me? Comfort...ahhhh...yessss... When I originally lay eyes on this, I knew it would make the comfiest nightgown. While I'm not ready to make that yet for winter, I couldn't resist pulling it out for my purposes today.

 CUTTIN' UP

First, while I typically design and create my own patterns (see HERE), time around I am hurting for time, so I go to my saved projects and find a free printable pattern. Who doesn't love that?!? I'm so thankful to bloggers, like Emily of Life Sew Savory, who share their talents with tutorials for FREE. I use her knit adaptation to her her original romper pattern HERE. I will say I was a bit overwhelmed by the number of sheets in the pattern - 32 pages to be exact. whew! However, I was happy how quick it is to assemble and remember that magic word f r e e. Just make sure you have tape and a paper cutter or scissors on hand. DIY Jumper Free Pattern | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces DIY Jersey Jumper Pattern Layout | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces Then, based on the sizing I picked size small for me. To be honest, so many times an online pattern ends up being the wrong size, but in this case, it's perfect. Remember my tablecloth sun hat? I went with a bigger size pattern because I thought there was no way the right one would fit...wrong. I had to size it down a ton. Lesson learned. With that in mind, I cut out on the size small lines and place it on my fabric that is folded for two pieces cut at the same time. DIY Jumper Pattern on Jersey Knit Bedsheet Fabric | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces Also, if you notice, I have the pattern hanging off the edge of the fabric because I'm wanting a refashioned jumper made into shorts. I place the pattern using the "add length here" arrows an inch and a half from the end so I have hem allowance. Oh, and in case you're wondering, those pattern weights I made are giant metal washes from a hardware store wrapped in scrap fabric strips. I love them!

ASSEMBLY

Next, as soon as I have my pattern pieces cut, I begin to assemble on my sewing machine. Typically, I would use my serger, but alas...it needs repair. Instead, I use my zigzag stitch on my sewing machine with jersey knit needle and follow the suggestions by Emily for her pattern. STITCHIN' TIME

As bumming as I am that my serger is sitting on the sidelines staring at me, I'm eager to have a go at this pattern. Nearly three-fourths of the way complete, I find my bobbin runs out of thread. I fill the bobbin in a rush and carry on. Little did I know doomsday is approaching. Emptying Thread Spool Nightmare | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces AAAAAAAGGGHHH!! How could I make such a newbie mistake, right? haha. Well, I continue sewing praying that it would be enough to finish this with a fabric store thirty minutes away. Here's a peek of it pinned to my shirt so I could measure for straps. I'm lovin' it already! Trying on DIY Refashioned Jumper | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces In addition, to measuring for straps, I also take into account the length of the legs. These are capri length and super cute, but it's still summer and I want something I can wear now. ugh. To cut or not to cut? Cropped Refashioned Jumper Legs Before | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces Well, my rotary cutter won, and I cut them above the knee and just need to hem. Y'all...I had one bottom cuff to complete and got one-fourth of around it and then this happens... Running Out of Thread Nightmare | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces My DIY self decides to fill another bobbin so I can squeeze out the last bit of thread before I run out. bwahahaha!! What a visual...Oompa Loompa! I get the potty thing as my mom would stick me in rompers when I was little and I HATED THEM (wedgies!!) This one is so loose-fitting that it's easy to slip out of and get the potty job done. Thanks for the smile, Niki, and I hope your technology woes go away.
