Trash to Treasure time. woot, woot! While you'll see their projects in a bit, let's take a peek at what I have ready for you. This vintage gem is getting new life as a reclaimed silverware chest table. Does that sound fun or maybe crazy? Hang tight and I'll show you how.
Not only are grandma's old silverware boxes treasures to behold as they are, but they are also chock full of potential. In the past, I've created many things with them, including:
I will say this one is by far the largest one I've ever come across and the most unique in finish. Not to mention that the outside has that yellowed paint while the inside has a bright purple.
However, the coolest part is the extra storage space below the faux bottom.
BUILDING UP
Isn't it fun? Along with that, I've been itching to make use of these turned legs I have in my stash. Originally, my goal is to use all eight of the legs to create and etagere shelf. When I would design it, I just didn't get excited about it. So, here I am ready to put four of them to good use.
In order to take this party to a new level, I need to create a skirt to attach the legs to as well as to the silverware chest. First, I cut scrap to length and then use my pocket joint jig to create pocket joints.
Then, I use a milk paint to give the entire piece two coats of paint letting cure in between coats.
NEXT STEPS
Next, while the paint cures, I head out to my workshop to dig out scrap luan (thin plywood) to cut it the same size as the original faux bottom.
After that, I use a basic white paint to give two coats to the boards so that when I apply fabric the grain doesn't peek through.
As soon as they're dry, I place the boards paint side down on the uncut remnant fabric I found at the thrift store. I'm smitten with those blue roses!

FINISHING TOUCHES
Last, but not least, I use painter's tape to make stripes across the top. Ooh, la, la! Additionally, you can see how I've recently used stripes to add character to this
bread box or this
French Provincial hutch desk.
Then, to finish it all off and give a bit depth, dimension, and protection, I use a white wax.

This little build is fun, stylish, and full of secrets to store your stash. What would you hide away in there?
For me? I might use this bedside to hold my daily essentials on top, and my journal and keepsakes on the bottom. On the other hand, maybe I use it for my sewing goodies with treats tucked below for a mini getaway. Although, I just love it for the whimsy it has. tee hee.
