Do you ever get so excited you get goosebumps? I do...all the time. haha! Especially when friends ask, "Do you want these?" and they bring out these chippy gems. No questions asked...YES! How could I refuse? Plus, my husband brought home a gorgeous hardwood pallet that I recently beat apart. I feel a reclaimed desk set build coming on!
Take a look at this hardwood maple...eep! One doesn't pass up such things when they cross your path. (just sayin')
DIY TIME
First, I just want to say "Thank you" to Billie who let me shop her barn for all her treasures she has stored up. When I get to ogle her garden shed, she showed me those turned legs above and asked..."do you want these?" Umm...yes, ma'am!! How could I pass up such an offer? However, before I get after those, I need to pull out my toys to clean up that pallet wood.
The wood has saw marks all over and is quite shaggy. So, that means I need to plane it down. This bench-top planer is so addictive and fun!
Although, I come out looking like a sawdust snowwoman itching like I have poison ivy all over, I still enjoy it to the full. If you've never used one of these before, the idea is simple. Take off small layers slowly to reveal the gorgeous wood beneath. You can see how we used it to build our reclaimed wood kitchen counters in
our remodel HERE.
Also, take a peek at this cast iron bench entrusted into my care for an update. It was so aged and covered in moss that the planer saves (and my sander) the day! Seeing this wood come to life makes me get even more excited to see this reclaimed console table vision come to fruition.
Who knew there was gorgeous white oak hiding under there, right? Plus, the boiled linseed oil really makes it shine. You can see how I used the same oil to refresh my antique pew covered in mud
in this post.
NEXT STEPS
Next, I need to chop those legs down a bit to get them to the right height for my purposes. Again, my miter saw (with
DIY dust collector hood) come to the rescue.
Then, it's time to get the pallet wood ready, I also use my miter saw to get it to length. After that, I use my pocket hole jig to create pockets for screws for the best kind of assembly.
Notice, I added pockets for screws to drive up into the top boards for a secure finish. Don't you just love tools? eep!
Before I wrap this up, I want to make use of those scraps I cut off from the legs initially. There's no need for waste. They just need to be spun into something useful. Not only do these solid wood scraps have funtastic chippy paint, but they also will serve as a great base for my riser. As a matter of fact, I even have just enough scrap pallet wood left to make it too. Yay!
THE REVEAL
Here is my reclaimed desk set with all the rustic charm I can muster. Isn't it fun?
I'm excited to use this for my assortment of plants and keeping them in the only window suited that is southern facing in my home. However, I'm staging them for today's purposes as a desk. I'm excited to be keeping this for just me as it's rare that I am able to do that with my limited space.
RECLAIMED LOVE
The light wood paired with the white really makes my heart pitter-pat. Are you with me on this one? It's hard to pass up good wood like that.
In addition, I had to add these two pieces back somewhere. I felt they looked perfect on the front of this seat (riser). Plus, I couldn't let a bit of this wood go to waste.
Finally, inspiring you is my goal. Next time, pick up that pallet and those misfit pieces and have fun creating, whether big or small. Likewise, pin and share to inspire others too!
