Do you ever have one of those moments when you're either at a garage sale or thrift store and something stops you and makes you say, "Ooooohhh..."? I love when that happens. Take for instance this nightstand I spied. It is the perfect candidate for today's Trash to Treasure Tuesday - a fun day where my blogger friend's and I share some project goodness with you. Let's get busy with this nightstand makeover, and be sure to check out the other projects below. Vintage Nightstand Before Makeover by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com I'm calling this a nightstand, but really it is also an end table or side table or pretty much anywhere-you-want-to-put-it table. My oldest daughter, Miss C, was looking for a project since her and her siblings join me in my adventures. You can see her past work HERE and over HERE. All I needed to see where those legs and detailing and I was hooked. Same went for her as soon as I showed it to her. Also, she loved the idea and since I had my coupon we were able to score this piece for $7. CHA-CHING! However, it did need some lovin', as you can see. Time for a nightstand makeover, yessssss. Top of Nightstand with Damage | Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com At this point, Miss C had already used a scraper, rubbing alcohol, and some elbow grease to remove the sticky gunk on the top. You can see the spots where it was and even how the finish is flaking off as well.

DIY TIME

First, Miss C chose to sand down that inner panel to see if she could revive the wood. Because that inner panel was a veneered layer, she delicately sanded off the layers with a 120 grit paper and my orbital sander. Then, it took her nearly an hour of sanding just so that she could avoid going through the veneer. Sanding Thrifted Nightstand | Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com Once done sanding the top, Miss C, also lightly sands the rest to give it tooth for paint. Yup, the top was going to get revived and the bottom some paint lovin'. Painting Nightstand by Teen Girl | Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com Last, her color choice was the same color I used on this dresser, this bench, and my repurposed cart (can you tell I'm lovin' it??).

NEXT STEPS

After the base cabinet, Miss C decides to keep the wood on top. However, she adds a bit of wash to create dimension. Exactly like I did to our dining table not so long ago. Whitewashing Nightstand Top by Prodigal Pieces | prodigalpieces.com

Great work! Puts a lazy gal like me to shame. Miss C is learning the best skills for the future. And Momma will need a storage unit for all miss C's future pieces! Fabulous

Miss C. did a terrific job! Is the basket/container in the corner of your bedroom a project or purchase? It is a very unique piece. I love trash to treasure Tuesday. You ladies always shine!

Thanks so much, Susan! I bought the basket to sell ages ago, but fell in love with it. It's a wicker basket wrapped in coconut husks. So cool.
