So many times, I get asked how I am able to decorate on a tiny budget. Well, the answer lies in making use of what I have or what is affordable. Shopping your home is definitely the easiest, most economical way to change up your decor. Let's pretend today that you already own this Americana wall art below, but you want a more modern look. It's about to become a DIY welcome sign coat rack. Hang with me now...
To begin, I think this art is cute and well done. However, it is made of solid wood and just ripe for the picking for a new look.
There're many ways you could go with this, but since modern farmhouse is popular right now, I decided to use it for my example. I could have went cottage, shabby chic, or even industrial theme too.
DIY TIME
First, I ran the half round through my table saw giving it 3" interval faux planks. The blade was set at 1/8" depth and the fence set as needed. Likewise, you could also use a router or circular saw and Rip-Cut too. See the beads?
In the instance you prefer no power tools, you could also paint them on or use a hand saw. However, this method is definitely more realistic looking.
Then, once I had my faux planks, I spray painted the whole thing in a flat black. This is the base color I want to peek out through my next layer. Next, I used my paint brush to dry brush the DIY welcome sign using a basic latex flat white paint.
Notice how I'm not going for even, solid coverage. Just an aged appeal of sorts.
Next, I created my design in an editing program (PhotoShop or Word work well). I hand-painted the text on after using
my transfer method to place the art I created. While I was after a DIY welcome sign, you could have added text for most anything. Which would you choose? (kitchen, bath, laundry, kids room)
ALL DONE
Finally, to finish it all up, I added hooks for function and charm.
To soften the sign a bit, I added a laurel design to the edge. Isn't it fun to make things have your own personal touch?
Not only do we now have a welcoming sign, but a functional piece of wall decor too. I'm all about making use of all the spaces in our home.
