Do you ever make a mistake with a project and want to just throw it out the door? Well, I do make mistakes and this time, particularly, I couldn't throw it out. It's wood! So instead of burning this wood round that gave me fits, I decided to turn it into something new. Check out how I created a DIY harvest time sign for the beginning of our autumn season.
Truth be told, I broke this thing when I was building a pedestal table out of a broken hall tree. You can read all about that
HERE. What happened was when I was tapping the top on, I broke the edge of the round off. This "mistake" totally reminds me of how we see ourselves versus how God sees us. We may feel broken beyond usefulness, but He has a plan. The key is to being patient and wait for His timing to fall into place. Do you ever feel like waiting is the hardest thing? I do.
DIY TIME
Now...what to do with a broken wooden circle? Turn it into something completely new. Yeehaw! I won't drag out each step because it's pretty simple. However, my end goal was to create a DIY harvest time sign with a bit of whimsy.
First, I tried using a straight edge to guide my jigsaw to take off both of the ragged edges. It's not like I could run this through our table saw to rip it off since there's no straight edge to push it against.
I found that the jigsaw was a bit wonky, so I ditched it. Instead, I grabbed my circular saw and got it done lickety-split. {{happy dance}}
NEXT STEPS
Next, I took the the smaller of the two pieces and drew on an outline of pumpkins to cut out with my jigsaw. Once those were done, I sanded and stained them both. Here is the dry layout of the pieces shown below:
Time for some painting fun! I painted the pumpkins in a rustic style with an aged appeal. Not only was this was fun for me to take a minute to unwind, but also because my kids gather 'round to watch me work. What a blast!
Once the paint cured, I added dimension using brown wax. While that cured, I used
my transfer method to create and paint some typography to the larger of the broken pieces.
THE REVEAL
Last, I assembled them with wood glue and my nailer. Here it is ready to decorate someone's home.
Isn't it fun? It reads: Harvest Time - "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few." Luke 10:2. What does that mean? Simply put, God is at work in the hearts of people, and He asks us to reach out to them, show them love, and draw them into His loving arms. Funny thing is that when I decided on this design our church was having their annual missions conference and had a guest speaker that used this verse. That for me was confirmation of my project - humble though it may be.
Can you see how the layering of the wood created a cool dimension?
HARVEST SEASON
I thoroughly enjoy decorating
our mantel for the seasons, though we're in a bit of a transition state with our remodel which deems it nearly impossible. However, I make the most of it while I can and enjoy the beauty that nature inspires. How do you like to decorate for fall?
