Don't you love it when an idea hits you and that smack in the head leads to something fun? It will be the oddest moment at times that it strikes, or it will be in a flash. That's what keeps DIY interesting, challenging, and a delight to do. What you see below is a hot mess initially (pun intended), but this upcycled wooden trivet is getting some
love.

I've actually had this for a few years tucked away in
my kitchen cupboards waiting to use it. However, after my spring purge, I have never used it, so it heads to my potential project pile.

At first glance, you see a butcher block style trivet that has burn marks, grease, and all-around wear. No problemo!
REWORKING
First, I am clueless what to do with it for a time. It's a basic butcher-block style walnut that has gorgeous potential. However, the shape has me kinda looking at it cross-eyed. Sometimes, I post a before in
my previous post so that I'm challenged to rework whatever I'm stuck on. Then, that forces me to really mull it over and have at it.
After this, as soon as the perfect idea hit me, my wheels take off and I'm out in my workshop ready to roll. I begin by grabbing my builder's square and find center of the trivet.

Not only does this give me an idea of the amount of space I have to work with, but also give me starting point. What is more, I take a piece of scrap paper cut in the likeness of this trivet so I can cut the paper before I cut the wood. Likewise, I figure out the angles I need to cut and put the wood under my miter saw chopping block.

Last, but not least, I make one more cut to come up with this...no waste here!

Finally, after sanding all the pieces, I use wood glue and my nailer to assemble and finish my creation.
BE STILL
Afterward, I add some "junk" embellishments from my stash, here's my upcycled wooden trivet turned heart.

At first glance, you can see the heart with scrap on top being featured. Furthermore, you can see the metal knob from
my recent antique dresser redo. Also, there's the vintage letter tiles from my thoughtful friend
I first used HERE.

So, tell me...did you see that coming? I'd love to hear your ideas for the trivet. Additionally, maybe you can find your own and give it a try! In the meantime, you can find this heart and more in
my online store.
