Have you seen one of these before? I think we all have in some form. My grandmother had one, and my mom even. They sure are handy when you need them. However, sometimes they have lost their purpose and need new life. This is my upcycled silverware chest project for you today.
I came by this one secondhand, but can easily see the potential. Do you? It's made of wood, and that alone gives it oodles of potential. Then, there's the inside...

Back to the makeover fun...
We've got a fun red lining with a concave top shelf, and a lined drawer on the bottom for even more storage. Vintage party on the side!
DIY TIME
Time to get this upcycled silverware chest makeover started. First, I yank out the interior as it was damaged from a liquid spill. Also, the red wasn't exciting me.
This is that top concave part that I want to do away with. While it may be functional for flatware, it doesn't serve my new purpose. Instead, I prefer a flat surface. So, I cut a piece of scrap luan to fit the bill.
I am wrapping the board in a thin cotton batting covered by a cotton fabric.

NEXT STEPS
Then, I tackle the outside with wood filler and sanding. It's not actually as bad as it looks, but the top did have oodles of scuffing.
Next, I apply two coats of paint, letting cure in between coats.
Last, but not least, I add a few decorative elements to the top, and then put it all together.
THE REVEAL
French party on the outside, but also party on the inside. woot!
Is that a huge difference, or what? Not only is the whole vibe of it completely new, but also the function. Now, it's perfect for use with jewelry, your memory treasures, or anything your heart desires.
