There are times when I'm overloaded and am going thru the paces in robotic fashion and don't really realize what's going on around me. I'm sure we've all been there. Recently when I went to visit a friend at her thrift store, I wasn't in the mind-frame to shop. {{gasp, I know...right?}} However, despite my brain fog, I was able to spy this...an upcycled lazy susan turned quilting square cutting board.
While I'm initially whispering "geniussssss...", my eyes can't get away from the gorgeous oak being covered up. With that, I'm aiming to revive this piece while also show you how to make your own. Deal?
DIY TIME
As you can imagine, I ripped off that cutting mat to find it's adhered with double-stick tape. Smart move.
While smart to use something that deems the cutting mat removable, I still see where the tape has altered the finish on the lazy susan. Also, do note I passed the mat along to my daughter who is crafty like myself. Her chicken are best sellers in
my shop. woot!
Then, after my nail-bending-tape-removal-feat-of-determination, I use Goo Gone to remove the residue without disturbing the wood. Now, I need to remove the finish with my sander with 150 grit paper. As my typography lovin' self sees a blank slate, I have no other option than to create my own design to dress up this already beautiful wood.

Last, here's my thrifty find released from the bonds of double-stick tape with an added new look.
BE PRESENT
"The fondest memories are made when gathered around the table." One of my purest joys is when my family is seated around our table. Whether its for a meal, school time, devotions, or game time, I look around and count my blessings. This phrase has always spoke to my heart. I think it's perfect to give this upcycled lazy susan a story-telling feel. In addition, I didn't use a stencil, but rather created my own design using
my transfer tutorial.
Not to be a downer, but we never know for certain when someone around us will not be there anymore. Cherishing those times is key. However, that doesn't mean we live in fear, but that we realize what gifts we have in those we love, to not take it for grated or abuse the blessing bestowed.
It just goes to show what you can do with those cast-off decor pieces that fill up shelves (or our closets...ahem...you know who you are).
