Who says we have to stick with our decor because (1) it's not in the budget to remodel (2) so-and-so gave it to me (3) I don't have time. Well, let me assure you that you're not alone if you relate to any of those. Folks, there is no need to break the bank when it comes to making your home story. For instance, I'm taking this thrifted louver wall cabinet to show you how I can change with very little effort, money, or time. Vintage Louver Cabinet Before Makeover | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces When I spy this at the thrift store, I instantly know it's a keeper. Since I'm more of a vintage gal, this suits me in the function. However, though I'm not into prim (as it's currently a satin black), it does however show potential for a different style. Note that it's completely filthy! Open Louver Cabinet | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces Here's what I see... solid wood with luan (thin plywood) backing, working louvers, and wall-mounted ready.

MAKEOVER TIME

First, I want to point out that I despise painting louvers. ahem. One of my jobs in college was working on paint crew. Not only did we paint interior, but also the exterior of homes, decor, repair and remodel. When you are the newbie, you get jobs like painting louver doors, inside of kitchen cabinets or tiny dark closets. Thankfully, they saw I was good at it and that didn't last long. whew! Truth be told, I used to have louver doors on my mudroom but took them out after someone broke them and put a curtain instead. To start this makeover, I remove the hardware, knob, and backing. Using a 2:1 water to vinegar mixture, I clean with a toothbrush and prep the surface. Finally, here is my thrifted louver wall cabinet with a new "old" look and appeal. Likewise, I save the color for a fun peek-a-boo interior with the blue against that floral green paper. Yes, there was nothing wrong with the black. But remember, my goal was to show you how you can update what you already own, thrift, or receive as a gift to reflect YOU. You and me both. Though, as of late, I've been deep-purging/downsizing the last few years and it's nice.
