I've often admitted I have a "thing" for any and all baskets. Are you the same? They're functional, add style, and come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and textures. The one you see below has been hanging in my home for over a decade. While I've enjoyed it in the as-is condition, I feel it's time for a new look to create a farmhouse hanging basket makeover. Thrifted Hanging Basket Before | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces What's unique about this basket it that is has a flat backside so that you can hang it on the wall or a door. Originally, I found it at a garage sale for a quarter. While I intended to use it to create front door decor, it ended up being an addition to my bedroom filled with countless blooms.

So, for many years I enjoyed the rustic vibe it has, but always in the back of my mind I wanted to remove the hot glue mess of it inside from the faux flowers in it when I purchased it.

GLUE MESS

Maybe you've run into the problem of old glue or misplaced glue on a decor piece or craft you're making. All you need to do is reverse the cooled glue back to warm so you can remove it. To do that, I use my basic hair dryer for a couple of minutes, and I can easily remove it with my fingers or some other tool.

That's better, right? That way I can work with a clean (er) surface without gunk in the way.

CHANGE IT UP

As you can imagine, there's not a whole lot of ways you can go with a basket that's...let's say...rustic. ahem. I could do decoupage, maybe cover with fabric as well. Maybe you're wondering why you would want to do this? I say why not? Maybe you found a fun basket that needs a new look or you're wanting to revamp your already decorated decor without breaking the bank. You can see many of my basket makeovers in these posts:

However, I opt for using a classic white milk paint for a single coat base coat.

This will refresh it as well as allow that original dark stain to peek through keeping with the rustic vibe. Then, while the paint is curing, I head to my computer to make a iron-0n transfer using this old pharmacy and herbal shop graphic from The Graphics Fairy.

Printing Transfer for Farmhouse Hanging Basket Makeover | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces Next, I iron on my transfer to a piece of canvas and set it aside. After that, I dig into my fabric stash to find some black ticking fabric. I just LOVE ticking. (see HERE). Thankfully, I have a couple of pieces ready for lining my basket. However, I just need to iron a bit to get a fold on the top edge. After that, I place my basket on one panel and cut it to fit the shape of the back. Cutting Ticking Fabric for Farmhouse Hanging Basket | prodigalpieces.com prodigalpieces To attach the fabric, I use my hot glue gun and go around the edge and down the corners a bit, but the bottom is left loose. Finally, as an added touch, I use a brown wax to age the paint the graphic fabric after attaching it.

Thanks for the tip on removing old glue, I've struggled with that, too. Another great tip is just gluing the fabric into the basket, that ironed edge gives it a crisp edge. I love my hydrangeas, I'm going to check out your wreath tutorial next.

Love the basket and flowers. Do not take to heart people who try to tell you things that are not right. Many people are so sure they know what they are talking about they just have to straighten out others. Pay them no attention. I have enough to do keeping me and my cat straight. Prayers for you and your family.

Yes! I've used my hair dryer when gluing upholstery and oh so many things. haha. Limelights go from that gorgeous white to this rosy pink...so beautiful.

Thank you, Vangie. Yes, I know that God knows me both good and bad and His love is all that matters. Hugs!

Love this basket? You come up with the best ideas and sometimes I literally gasp when I see how you took something pretty "Bad" and turned it into a work of art! Question: Is there a process for ironing the art onto the canvas? That is so cool. Love it!

Thank you! Yes, I've had many hot glue oops issues, especially after I work hard upholstery and adding trim and then...BAM. Hair dryer to the rescue! And yes, she is a sad soul.

Hooray!! I'm so glad you think so. I just follow the instructions that come with the printable transfer paper. I prefer Avery brand as it's done the best for me. Hot iron, no steam and press. Nice part is you can check it to see if it's releasing and put it back down if not.

I would fill the basket with kittens! And it just “frosts my cookies” when people use the excuse of being “Christian” to say and do things that are very un-Christ-like! I have no patience with that sort of behavior and I’m so sorry you had to deal with it. Hugs!!

I'm sorry you have had negative feed back. Some people call themselves Christians, but they are not following the instructions of our savior. You can't know what a person goes through you're been there. We are not to judge. Praying for you.

You are a kindred spirit! haha! Yes, to your other point. I just can't imagine speaking to anyone like that in any form or platform. Sigh...God knows.

Thank you for understanding. What boggles my mind is that I told my story...my story...and how I learned what I did wrong and what could have been better. I just don't understand and feel that toddlermama had an ax to gring with anyone.

Beautiful...simple and elegant! I have a similar basket and now feel inspired to pretty it up :) Can't wait to see what you do with the metal bits...I found one at a thrift store, no idea what it is, and hoping for inspiration for it. Also love your ginger cat, Ivan; I had one when I was young and still have a soft spot for an orange cat.

That's what I like to hear, Carroll! :D Did you find a treadle machine foot pedal too? That's awesome! Yes, I've always wanted an orange tabby and this guy is living up to tabby persona. haha.

Dear Larissa, I can’t believe the hate that fills the hearts of so many people nowadays. And they try to hide it under the guise of their faith. God did not create us to be judge, jury and executioner. He put us here to love one another. It makes my heart hurt to see you accosted like that. Be strong, my friend. You are on the path that is right for you and your family. God is with you.

What a ray of light you are, Gayle. Thank you for your affirming words. I know I shouldn't take heart to her words, and I don't though they sting because I KNOW my heavenly Father has me and family (all of His children) in the palm of His mighty hand. This will all work out to His glory.

I try not to, but, as I'm sure you know, whether reading them or hearing them, we can't control unseeing or unhearing them. It's tough sometimes, but over the last 4 decades I've had loads of practice as to what to do with them. Thank you, Jo.
